  • Among white voters, President Obama has a 35{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/61{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove rating.  Among African Americans, he is at 89{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/7{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove.  Portending turnout problems, among Hispanics Obama’s job rating is just 48{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/41{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove.
  • Among white voters, there is only a nine point net gender gap.  Among white men, Obama has a 33{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/63{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove rating, while he’s at 37{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/58{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove among white women.
  • Of note, there is no difference between the President’s approval rating among men based on education level.  Among women, however, there is a huge difference.  Women with college degrees are positive at a 53{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/43{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove rating, while women without a college degree give Obama just a 38{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/55{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove rating.
  • Independent voters are unhappy with the President.  He has just a 32{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} approve/58{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} disapprove mark.

Further evidence of a sour political environment is that just 31{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} say the country is going in the right direction, while 61{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} say things in the country are pretty seriously off on the wrong track. The mood of the country continues to set records for longest streak of pessimism since the Watergate/Carter malaise era – 124 consecutive months in which wrong track has been higher than right direction.  The last time more voters said right direction was January 2004.

The survey was conducted May 7-10, 12, 2014 among a super sample of 1,600 registered voters, and has a margin of error of +2.45 percent in 95 out of 100 cases.   Fully 536 interviews were conducted with cell phone respondents (33.5{09f965da52dc6ab4c1643a77bd40d1f729d807040cd8db540234bb981a782222} of the sample).
